Retaining A Divorce Attorney

It’s settled. You’ve decided that it’s in your best interest to file for divorce. At this point, your future seems uncertain and you need answers to many troubling questions. You are unclear as to what to do next… consider retaining a divorce attorney.

There is no doubt that this can be a frightening time. But, with the help and advice of a good divorce attorney, chances are that blanket of fear will be lifted or, at least, reduced.

Don’t know where to start? Ask a friend or family member to refer you to a divorce attorney, they might have had contact with, in the past. (With the current divorce rate at almost fifty percent, you probably know someone who has been in this unfortunate situation.)

If that is not an option, consider contacting an attorney you have retained on another matter, in the past, for the purpose of asking for a referral. Many attorneys depend on referral clients and are always happy to put you in touch with a colleague, as they know that same colleague will, no doubt, return the favor.

One of the most important points to remember when selecting a divorce attorney, is this: you need to work with an attorney you feel comfortable with. You may not think ‘chemistry’ is an issue, but in reality it does make a difference. In essence, if you are not comfortable with the attorney, during the initial visit, look elsewhere.

Remember to jot down the list of questions you want to ask, during your initial meeting with your divorce attorney. This will alleviate the possibility of you neglecting to ask a specific question, in the event you are nervous.

It is much better to take the extra time to find the right divorce attorney, at the start, than it is to make a switch halfway through the proceedings. Not only is a situation like this more expensive, it is more time consuming and stressful, as well.
